Ah yes

Today's 50-minute run went swimmingly. Totally effortless. And you know, I had it coming--it had been awhile.

As any runner knows, the majority of one's runs are not wholly comfortable experiences. Of course, being adequately trained helps significantly, but still, there's almost always a stretch--those first couple of miles usually, but sometimes longer--involving resistant leg muscles and/or uneven breathing, plus a vigorous & self-deprecating internal monologue. But sometimes there's not. Sometimes the experience is mysteriously w/o the above qualities, and it's these times that keeps a runner a runner. Free & easy runs absolutely have to occur, and they have to occur on a reasonably regular basis.

Today saw one such run. So did Tuesday ('run to Redhook & back' day), even if the long duration meant I faded some toward the end. But today, today was divine, divine like the small box of Jujyfruits I polished off as last night's dinner (although there could've been more than one black one--speaking of, what 'fruit' is this supposed to be? they look like bundt pans). The opening minutes were painless, and I felt like I was running on a sidewalk paved in clouds (the Rainbow Brite kind) rather than garbage and human fecal matter. Joyous! Reaching my well-worn East River Trail, the ease hung on, incidentally allowing for some well-formed thoughts on potential writing projects. Before I knew it, it was time to turn back, and 25 minutes later, voila, there I was, standing before the mountain range outside my door: industrial garbage bags rising and falling like the Cascades. Beauteous!

It all just makes me happy.

I live for those seemingly-effortless runs. Since the tri, I've been having a tough time of rebuilding my base. I've only been able to add a mile during each weekly long run, instead of two.

Sigh, I wish you were here so I could bend your ear on finessing my training!
